ART TRADE with ~BansheeRika

Another art trade with Rika. This time it's Vix - hope I got her right.

I wanted to take a break from the single-layer cel-shading stuff I've been doing recently (and indulge in my goofy love of drawing hands) - it's not perfect, but still, I hope the result doesn't look too rough and 'tarded.

Textures from Mayang.

Made with: OpenCanvas 4 (lines), Photoshop Elements (everything else), tablet

I like this, I think this style works in your favor for more intresting lighting sources as you have done here. It's also great to see that you used purple for the shadows rather than black.

Shadows in real life are not actually black but the opposit color of the object. So A blue object would have an orange shadow, and a yellow object a purple one. If not entirely sure what color the object is most fall back to use a purple. Than can use a soft desaturated yellow for highlights (it's only being used to really warm and highlight a spot). That will naturally give you a little pop.

Another rule of thumb is every color you use must be used at least three times. It does not have to be the exact color nor the same saturation but just enough to tie the main source for the color into the whole piece. This does not apply if you want your viewer to look at that bit of color almost exclusively.

Drawings not to bad and I gotta say I like how you added the texture to the background. It's a wonderfully colorful piece. :)

Thank you! :) I'm not great with colours - for a long time I used very little colour at all, and it wasn't too long ago that I started really trying to understand it - so I tend to favour purple as it works with pretty much everything. I used a faint peach colour to add some vague highlights, so I guess I was close there - I couldn't think of anything else that would work.

Thanks for all these tips, I'm trying to mentally note them all down. :D

I love the bold lines but I can't figure out why you were that bold on her left eye?

Eek! Eyelashes? If it looks too freaky or disproportionate I'll fix it up. D:

Well looks like you instintictly knew what to do. ^^ Cools push things back, warms bring things forward so purple and peach makes alot of sense.
I know how color can be difficult to understand. It looks simple but it's far from that. So a few set rule/guidelines I find are very helpful. These tricks will always work. Well the color involved with shading using the warms and cools probably wont with cell shading but thats a whole differnt kettle of fish. :)

I'm happy you find my tips helpful, some times I worry I may seem like I am just running my mouth.
